Chrome Plating Process

Chrome plating is a process to cover the surface of metal using other metal which have better characteristic such as stand to corrode. Plating process to the steel is by dissolving of metal substance like chromium metal in certain chemicals or solution to make chromium III ion in the solution. This positive ion the is charged by DC source make the positive ion is move to negative pole and plated there. Negative pole is a metal that will plated by this chrome metal which have better resistance to corrode and better performance like hard chrome or bright chrome.

Each solution to make hard chrome is different with solution to make bright chrome. Other type of chrome plating is black chrome that use solution of oxalic acid mixed with sulfuric acid on the bath chrome solution. The natural plated of chrome plating is white rather gray color of chrome plated and this color will change depend on the electric current force or Ampere and the time of plating. More longer time to plate the color more gray and even change to black color but can’t bright black color. To make the plating color of chrome plating become bright it need additive chemical called as brightener agent.

Fluid Corrosion on Steel

Corrosion problem on the system always being intense watch in selection of materials of construction for a particular fluid system, it is important first to take into consideration the characteristics of the system, giving special attention to all factors that may influence to corrosion. Since these factors would be peculiar to a particular system, it is impractical to attempt to offer a set of hard and fast rules that would cover all situations.

The materials should be set up in order can suitable for the system. The system is to be fabricated are the second important consideration; therefore, knowledge of the characteristics and general behavior of materials when exposed to certain environments is essential. To overcome this problem people always try to minimize the corrosion by some action like by electroplating such as chrome coating or by anodizing material, this depend on the characteristic of the system.

The corrosion information data for a particular set of fluid and environment conditions, a reasonable good selection would be possible from literature based on resistance of materials to a very similar environment. These data, should be used with some reservations. Good practice calls for applying such data for preliminary screening. Materials selected thereby would require further study in the fluid system under consideration.

Chrome coating for Decorative Steel

To make coating for decorative purpose, base metal that will coated with chrome plating usually coated first with nickel. After coated with nickel this base metal ready either coated with copper or chromic acid. The combination of two kind of metal will make this base metal more resistance to corrode and the thickness of coated metal thicker. For decorative coating thickness will vary from a few hundredths of mil to 1 mil. The mirror finish will only be as good as the finish, put on the surface before put on chrome.

For finishing with chrome plating, chrome must be micro finished will give coefficient of friction lower than any other metal when use against steel, iron, brass, bronze, Babbitt or aluminum alloys. To make a double coated don’t use chrome coated with chrome, because chrome is much harder than casehardened steel. Chrome resist to mostly all organic and inorganic compounds and acids, except hydrochloric acid. In sulfuric acid chrome can’t stand for longer use because this acid also very corrosive.

Electropolishing in Anodizing

Electropolishing is a process treatment of aluminum using electric current in a chemical solution. Electropolishing is make the surface of aluminum is open, the pore of oxide film that already stay on the surface of aluminum oxide will remove and open. Everybody sometime shopping a steel in material store or in Supermarket, for many purpose. It could be for appliance needed for your home, or buy in material because you need for steel construction. Steel for house building is different type, depend on the need it can be steel for structure or for decorative purpose. For decorative purpose, generally can use stainless steel. Stainless steel have many grade type, each grade type have different price. For Stainless steel 316 is expensive compare to stainless steel 314. But all type of stainless steel can be formed into a bright steel after special finishing treatment.
